Star and Bar 2003
Well as summer draws to an end the last of the summer sailing has now happened. The fleet could not have asked for better weather, maybe some more wind. There where 2 days of sailing with light Northerly winds, building at times to about 12knts. Seattle Yacht Club did a good job getting off 8 races.
Sat saw 5 Olson 30 start, unfortunately some of the fleet could not make it but that did not distract from the racing. Race 1 was the lightest of them all turning in to a drifter on the down wind leg. Wyewacket showed very good speed up and downwind slowly legging out on Apocalypso and Wild Turkey. Unfortunately for them they ran into PHRF traffic near the finish line and Apocalypso and Wild Turkey edged by. Race 2 saw a little more wind on the course and all the Olson's got off to a steady start with all the boats going right to get away from some strong flood tide. Wild Turkey Lead around the Windward mark followed by Apocalypso, both holding position to the finish with some very close racing all the way to the end, Wyewacket again showing good speed in third. Race 3 was held in similar conditions, but with Apocalypso rounding the Weather mark first followed by Bad Dog, showing good speed, Wild turkey managed to pass just before the leeward mark and managed to hold the lead to the finish putting in a loose cover. Followed by Apocalypso and Bad Dog. Race 4 saw the wind building to a good 12 -13 knts, making for work upwind. The new breeze saw Enigma storm to the front with some excellent upwind speed, only to be upset by Bad Dog who of on a flyer barged in at the Wind mark to round ahead. There was some interesting maneuvering at this point and some protest flags flying as Enigma altered course within 2 boat lengths of the mark. Bad Dog and Enigma held these positions all the way to the finish.
Sunday saw racing get off to an on time start with a good Northerly wind. Bad Dog was late for the first race and Wyewacket did not start on Sunday. This saw only 3 boats line up at the start. Wild Turkey took first followed by Enigma and Apocalypso. In Race 7 Wild Turkey decided to make a start on Port, port taking the fleet and leading to the Mark, followed by Apocalypso and Enigma. Race 8.saw Apocalypso lead from the start to the finish after some close starting maneuvers that saw all the boats dead in the water at the start.
Thanks go to Seattle Yacht club for a fun regatta. If you where not there you missed some good racing. Thanks to all the Olsons that came out and allowed us to have a one design start.
